Lucki Lus’ aka Lustah feeling the music

Lucki Lus’ feeling the music
Biko Kennedy, Youthlink Writer

For the bulk of Lucki Lus’ career he has been at a cross-roads typical of upcoming reggae/dancehall artistes. How does one pay homage to reggae/dancehall’s glorious past yet connect to a generation born, raised and heavily influenced by international appeal? In a world dominated by popular music, Lucki Lus’ focus and direction are geared towards mastering the ever-changing Jamaican sound.
Given name: Basil Waite
Stage name: Lucki Lus, aka ‘Lustah’
Meaning behind name: Growing up he used to get himself in a lot of little scraps with the neighborhood guys and was always lucky to get out of those situations without any major difficulty. As the years passed and the moniker ‘lucky’ became synonymous with his persona, his interest in music began to grow. Gravitating to persons like Terror Fabulous and the group LUST, he eventually decided to add ‘Lust’ to his moniker as he’d always had that inclination towards music.
Notable releases: Baby I Want You, Independent Ladies, Sayonara
Accomplishments: He has shared stages with some of reggae’s top artistes including Tarrus Riley, Dean Frasier, Ravon and Duane Stephenson, and is the co-founder of the label Most Wanted Records.
What fascinates him the most about music?
“When you’re musically inclined you learn to appreciate art from the stand point of the technical aspects of it; what people do to arrange songs and how they blend varying sounds to create a major hit. I was always interested in what goes on behind the scenes, the amount of work and effort put in there to put something together, then from that watch the impact it can have on an audience.”
His take on who the music business attracts
“The music business certainly attracts the good and bad to it. The good ones will want to edify, enlighten and entertain with their varying talents, while the others would just crave the fame and fortune. They are usually the ones to burn out or fade away faster. They may have a hit song or get lucky with a hit album but they do not stay around for very long, because the music wasn’t being produced out of love for it; it was rather a matter of achievement. This is where you can view the difference between an artiste who makes a good song and one who makes a great song.”
Why he believes bravery makes a difference in a song
“It’s not what you say but rather a matter of how you say it, and not necessarily what you have to offer but rather how you present it. A lot of people are afraid to venture out of the box and create something new, and that is why a lot of artistes are caught in a slump after a while. Being brave enough to take the necessary risk to be different is what made persons like Michael Jackson, Sam Cooke and all those greats stand apart from everyone else. That is basically what I’m striving towards.”
How studying other genres propels his creativity
“The void that I can see in the industry right now is the inability to bridge different genres. Sometimes when I listen to a song, I can close my eyes and actually feel the words of that song and that is the main thing lacking in reggae/dancehall songs today; that feeling. Yes, you’ll have artistes who try to fuse the varying genres but when you hear it, it’s like a dramatic switch and not a smooth transition; it’s like a drastic change in the energy, either going up or down. So what I’m doing is |studying how others may organise their melodies and lead vocals and fuse that with what I already know, incorporating it with my lyrics, sound and energy. With this, people will hear a song of mine and realise that it’s not that typical reggae/dancehall sound.”

A Motivated Dquan looks to make his Mark in Music

Posted on January 26th, 2012 by Most Wanted Records

Dquan- One of kind (Radio)Known to the music world as Dquan, Damain Staple, who entered the world in the magnificent parish of Manchester, Jamaica, chose this name to pay deference to one of his musical icons.

His grandmother was his greatest influence. At the tender age of nine, she instilled in him his passion for music. Dquan humbly credits her for allowing him to find and nurture his voice. This eventually enabled him to connect with his thoughts to produce quality music.
He gives thanks for having the experience of singing in church choirs, which motivated him to write his own lyrics. That same motivation has also guided him to become the recording artist and DJ that he is today. As a result of his drive, he has received astonishing reviews from fellow peers in the industry.
Other musical influences and sources of inspiration include: Bob Marley, Akon, Sanchez, Beres Hammond, Frankie Paul and many others. Still Dquan strives to maintain his own musical versatility and style. In “Something About You”, his sultry voice caters to the ladies. In contrast, he illustrates the harsh reality of the true life in his hit “Too Much Suffering”. He states that some of his favorite singers are Ne-Yo and Sanchez because they make music for the ladies and they influence him to sing songs that everyday people are able to relate to. Already, fans are mentioning what they like most about him are his unique and alluring voice, along with his entrancing persona. The ladies also tend to enjoy his eyes and captivating smile.
Dquan, who grew up playing the drums and singing, truly believes he was born to create music. He intends to refresh the reggae genre by bringing forth young, vibrant energy and positivity. The artist expressed that Vybz Kartel is presently the best reggae/dancehall artist out there and is an example of the type of artist needed to keep the reggae industry alive. Familiar with stage, he has performed with Lady Saw, Mega Shock, Da Professor and Lustah.
Personally, Dquan’s biggest accomplishment thus far, has been to take that step in becoming an independent artist. Future goals for Dquan include releasing his own major hit as well as collaborating with major artists. In the long term he would like to develop his own label, signing new artists, all while continuing to sing and make music for individuals everywhere.
Dquan, who wants his music to be inspiring to all, suggests that all upcoming artists continue to “stay focused, never give up, because you never know when your big break will come.”
He is working on a collection of new singles that will be released this year on the Most Wanted Records label. His current singles are “Something About You,” and “Played Me For So Long.” He has also collaborated with label mate Lustah in “Single Lady” and “Nah Get Whey.”

There are strong messages that are evoked in Dquan’s songs.  There is compassion, respect, truth and still that rawness that can intrigue any individual.

Lustah’s latest song “Nuh Follow Him” on the Laughter Riddim

Posted on December 10th, 2011 by Most Wanted Records
Lustah’s latest song “Nuh Follow Him” on the Laughter Riddim by Mixing Lab, Jamaica’s #1 beat box, takes shots at Jamaica’s leading dancehall/reggae artiste Vybz Kartel, and is a potential chart topping single. The song is not meant as a “dis” to anyone, but is a playful warning to fans worldwide, that they should be careful about the artists they support and the messages that these artists are sending through their music.
As artists we know that our music is a powerful thing, so it is our responsibility to create songs that will bring laughter and positive guidance to our fans. But it is also the responsibility of parents and the fans themselves to perform their own due diligence and make choices that are right for themselves. We artists are here to entertain, to provide joy and to create dialogue however, due to social pressure and political misguidance some artists stray from this path.
People have the right to do whatever they want to do under the laws of the country that they are in, but remember that choices have consequences. Just because it is legal, doesn’t mean it is  good for you.

Lustah Leads the Revolution

Lustah Leads the Revolution

Despite being a veteran, Basil Waite, better known as Lucki Lus or Lustah, still believes he possess the potential to revolutionize the Jamaican music industry
The Jamaican born artiste, who has been residing in New York City for the last decade, has over the years continued to fine tune his craft.
“Originally it was just a hobby, but in the last two to five years, I’ve decided to take it to a professional level and I haven’t looked back since,” Waite noted.
Convinced he has possessed impeccable musical skills since his earlier years of playing ‘DJ’ in music class while in the ninth grade at Herbert Morrison Technical High School, the artiste has spent extensive periods studying different genres of music, which he has fused with his own reggae style to create a new vibrant musical offering for all his listeners.
“My music is still reggae, but it offers more versatility than that of someone who has grounded themselves in only one aspect of the music, so the listener has more to choose from in a single compact disc.”
Lustah, who currently writes his own music, has performed on various shows in his effort to hone his skill from West Indian Reggae Festival in Connecticut to Jamboree, just to name a few.
His most recent projects came with his trip back to Jamaica as he paid his tributes to Marcus Garvey at the Marcus Garvey Family Fun Day and Show held at the Montpelier Showground on Saturday, August 20, 2011. His exploits did not stop there; as he finished the voicing of his track-Don’t Burn it Down- for one of Jamaica’s top recording studios-Big Stone Recording- for their recently launched album-Iya Pickney.
Lustah is also currently putting in the work for his much anticipated 14 tracks album-Rewards-which is set to be launched February of next year.
‘The work has to go on and from here on out its never ending. The fan base has been growing internationally and the feedback we have been receiving is truly inspirational, so we have no intention of quitting,” Lucki added.
Waite’s songs have been blazing the airwaves locally, with request flooding radio stations such as Irie FM, Hitz 92 FM and RJR for his hit songs Sayonara and Naughty Shawty.
“Since I’ve been home, we hardly drive a day and not hear my songs on the radio or people telling us they love it as they can relate to what I’m saying or my song draws back a memory.”
Lustah is currently signed with Most Wanted Records out of Florida, where his music can be easily accessed through the company’s website which is linked to all major social networks.
Lustah strikes his trade mark pose for the camera after his visit to the Western Mirror office.

“The difference between a good song and a great song is bravery…bravery to truly venture into your own creative mind and allow yourself, not only to unlock real creativity, but then to be able to utilize it fully and completely without inhibition,” says Most
Wanted Records founder and singjay Lustah. Born and raised in Montego Bay, Lustah whose name is Basil Waite says it was reggae icon Bob Marley who influenced his passion for reggae music. The young singjay told the Observer that his love for music led him not to limit himself to reggae, but to explore different cultures of music. “I am very much fascinated with the melodies and emotions that other cultures highlight, which has broadened his musical taste to cover everything from rock to dancehall,” said the well-spoken entertainer.
Approximately two years ago, Lustah, armed with a legacy of musical knowledge, released his first single entitled “Sayonara.” Today the singjay’s voice frequently permeates the local and international airwaves with singles such as “Club Star,” “She Wants Love,” and “The Creator.” Lustah, a past student of Herbert Morrison Technical High who now calls the United States home says he is grateful to have performed in several US cities, Canada and sections of Europe. Having shared stage with artistes such as Tarrus Riley, Duane Stephenson, Dean Frasier, Ravon, Red Fox, Squeechie Dan, Bounty Killer, Movado, and others, Lustah says his musical journey is just beginning.
“I have no doubt that like many other great artistes my name and music will be fresh in the minds of many, decades from now. I will become a musical legend,” he firmly stated.
What’s next for Lustah? The versatile artiste is working on a host of singles with Jamaica-born, US-based producer John ‘Jon FX’ Crawford to be released later this year. One of the singles will feature label mate and veteran reggae artist Wayne Wade. He is, also, anticipating a collaboration with a popular dancehall artiste. The young musician is in the process of enrolling new talents to his Most Wanted Record Label.
Surprised to know: “I don’t believe in monogamy and the good book dictates that a man should have more than one wife, so does mother nature. So if we are to live by the order of the good book we should abide by it and not tailor its instructions to satisfy the ideologies of modern society.”
For young artist: “Hard work and dedication will always pay off. If you harvest positive energies and interject this energy into the foundation and body of every step that you make to attain your goals success is unalterable.”
